A rapid weight loss diet, as the name suggests, is one that helps you lose weight quite fast. In most cases, a rapid weight loss diet is almost identical with a crash diet, which deprives a human body to extreme limits in order to restrict calorie intake. Such a diet is only slightly different from total starvation, and is extremely unhealthy resulting often in malnutrition. That's why such a rapid weight loss diet is almost never recommended by doctors or dietitians.

Interestingly, when a person abandons a crash diet, he/she begins to eat much more than normal. As a result, the person not only regains the weight he/she had lost because of the diet, but puts on some extra weight as well. This perhaps makes it clear that such a rapid weight loss diet is not exactly beneficial for most of the people. In fact, it is now well known that some of these rapid weight loss diets can cause anorexia. Anorexia is a disorder that is marked by a loss of appetite or unwillingness to eat.

When a person loses appetite, the fall in the amount of energy consumption will eventually make him/her lose weight. When the amount of calories consumed is less than adequate, the body may become weaker and lose its ability to tolerate many challenges. As body weight begins to fall, it becomes more difficult for a person to resist illness and infection. A substantial weight loss may lead to a person not responding well to cancer treatments, a deterioration in the quality of life, and even death. If a person becomes reluctant to eat anything, it creates anxieties for those giving him/her care. Weight loss caused by anorexia may be temporary or may continue at a life-threatening pace if the patient keeps on consuming less energy than what is needed to sustain body weight.

Among various known forms of anorexia, the most familiar one is satiation following the consumption of food. This can happen in any normal person and is known as postprandial anorexia. It is important and healthy because it discourages overeating and prevents obesity. Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder which is marked by self-imposed starvation and exercise stress. It is a complex disease, which involves both psychological and sociological components.

Some low carb and high protein diets are also advertised as rapid weight loss diets that help you fast lose your extra pounds. In reality, they are harmful as the absence of carbs in any diet will deprive you of your much-needed energy and leave you in a weak, lethargic state.

So, if you want to achieve fast weight loss and need a rapid weight loss diet to reach your goal, it is important that you choose a diet that is healthy and can supply the nutrients you need to carry on life in a healthy and energetic manner. One such diet that deserves mention is the Mediterranean diet mostly because of its history and the formal research that has gone into it. It is a good idea if you look into this particular diet and judge its value as a rapid weight loss diet. It is, however, always better to seek the opinion of your doctor before choosing a diet of this nature.
